The Texas Association for the Education of Young Children (Texas AEYC) seeks to improve early childhood education in Texas by supporting members to be effective early childhood advocates and by collaborating with other agencies to promote public policies that address the needs of young children and their families.
81st Legislative Priorities
The following recommendations are based on the results of the Public Policy survey of members conducted in February 2008 and meetings with collaborating organizations.
- Develop the mixed delivery pre-k system to prepare it to be scaled up quickly. Ensure that the system allows all partners (public schools, childcare, and Head Start) who are committed to high quality early education to provide pre-kindergarten.
- Improve the quality of childcare by supporting increased professional development through pre-service and annual training for teachers and directors.

What are Interim Charges?
In preparation for the 81st Legislative Session , legislative committees will conduct more in-depth analysis of important issues affecting Texas.. In between sessions, the Lieutenant Governor usually specifies interim “charges” or topics to be studied by Senate committees. The Speaker of the House delineates interim charges to be studied by House committees. In addition, “select” committees can be formed to study a specific topic of interest. Usually interim committee work is compiled in a report provided to the full House and Senate outlining findings and recommendations. Because many bills are developed in interim committees, it is important to get involved now and share with legislators what is important to Texas communities and what the early care and education needs are across the state.
